GREEK EASTER CUSTOMS.

In every corner of Greece  Easter is celebrated in a unique way. Customs and traditions get alive and folklore events take place in the biggest celebration of Orthodox 

Christianity. Painting and crack the eggs, the procession of the Epitaph in the roads ,the transport of Holy Fire from the Church at home are the most characteristic  customs in whole Greece, Each region, however, has its own way of celebrating both the Passion and the Resurrection. In the Corfu resurrection is celebrated in a very "striking" way.

Inhabitants throw from their balconies  large clay vessels which shatter with a loud bang causing surprise of celebrating people and visitors of course.This year Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on May 5 th.

 The present city it is said to be created in the 14th century. Just 9 miles north of Litochoro, it is the archaeological site of Dion, one of the most important religious sites of ancient Macedonia for about a millennium (5th century BC - 5th century AD).  Today at the ancient theater of Dion take place important cultural events during summer season.

     Kea island, in a short 
distance from Athens,has a trail network with a total length of 36 kilometers and it is an ideal place for those who love hiking. 
The paths of Kea ,classified as "Network Route Cultural Interest",thus since last  year walking tourism in the island has been greatly developed.   

Twelve chosen tracks, at which  wooden boards are placed, guide walkers safely. Touring the mostly paved paths will bring walkers through forests of oaks and fields of wildflowers.Visitors will also meet traditional stone sources, picturesque churches.Their tour ends to small coves or beautiful beaches.

SKYROS ISLAND CARNIVAL

     One of the most original carnival customs takes place in  Skyros island,(central Aegian Sea)It is also known as  the custom of the Old Man of Corelli and Frangou.

 People wearing  bells celebrate in the center of Skyros .The Old Man"  is the  key member of a group , consisting usually of three to five people, who wander causing laughter and creating the characteristic ringing sound heard everywhere.

Ιt's called "taramosalata", that means fish roe salad .It is served this period of the year as an appetizer especially during  Shrove Monday.Try it with fresh or grilled  vegetables,spread on small slices of bread or toasts .It matches perfectly with  ouzo. 

A FAMOUS "FLOUR -WAR"

"Kathari Deftera"- Shrove Monday is a traditional feast that declares the end of the carnival period (this year is celebrated on March 18 ) .In Galaxidi (West Greece) the celebration has a unique color and is very spectacular.

Acturally it is a colored "Flour - war " among groups near the sea ,called "alevromoutzouromata" !  

It is said that the custom has been introduced by sailors very long time ago. 

Galaxidi is a beautiful city ,a popular touristic destination in a short distance from Delphi ancient oracle installations .

Α "VOLCANIC" BEACH

     Different from every other Greek beach because of all white volcanic rocks, reminding moonscape. Sarakiniko, is located in the northwestern side of the Milos island (Cyclades islands complex, Aegian Sea).

It is a "must to visit " beach,ideal for picture shots and crazy dives. On the rocks of Sarakiniko are still retained abundant fossils .The color of the sea, especially when the wind is strong, creates rare,spectacular tricolor . 

PATRAS CARNIVAL BEGINS

The Patras Carnival 2013 will be a a huge ,hot,full of suprises feast! The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, January 19 and will last from morning until late evening. 

The festivities will conclude with the grand parade on March 17! The nature in Patras will be beautiful, the weather will be hot thus it is expected a visitors increase , especially the young ones!
